But what is the story behind Mother's Day?
Mother's Day celebrations began in ancient Greece, in the festivities in honor of Rhea, the mother of Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto. The origin of today's Mother's Day dates back to 17th century England. At that time, due to poverty, one way to work was to be employed in the great houses or palaces, where shelter and food were also provided. On one Sunday of the year, called “Mothering Sunday”, servants and employees were given the day off to visit their mothers, and were allowed to bake a cake (known as a “mother's cake”) to take as a gift. This celebration took place collectively, in forests and meadows. The first official celebration took place on May 10, so this day was adopted by many other countries around the world as the date of ‘Mother's Day’.
